Ontario Pelicans

The American white pelican, a large, colonial-nesting waterbird is one of the largest of all North American birds, with a wing-span of up to 9’. Recently, these pelicans have been experiencing a drastic range expansion, colonizing new breeding areas throughout their range, including Ontario. Until relatively recently, American white pelicans were restricted in Ontario to colonies at Lake of the Woods. However, new colonies have recently become established in Lake Nipigon, Black Bay (Lake Superior), and even in northern James Bay. We are working on a large-scale project that involves many individuals and organizations, but we need your help in finding and identifying new populations to track the rapid expansion of our Ontario pelicans! Go to Get Involved! to find out how.
